The most encouraging thing I read lately was an account of Henri Nouwen’s prayerlife. He is a man I have heard of and considered to be an example of committed faith and great acts of love.

So I was interested to discover his prayer life, like mine, was distracted and fidgety. The significant thing was that he stuck with it, showing up each day and spending the time, however imperfectly, with God.

It reminds me to stop trying to do things ‘right’ (then feeling guilty at missing the mark) – and instead to get on and do the best I can with contentment. And above all not to quit.
